If you know my family, fishing is not simply something you do; it’s a way of life.

So, I had nothing to do last Saturday afternoon, so I decided to head to a nearby lake for a few hours. I have several homemade Lucky 13s and wanted to catch a few bass with one in order to get a few pictures on my web site. (Nothing to do as in I didn’t want to do any of things I was supposed to do.)

A Lucky 13 was a very popular bass fishing lure back in the beginnings of bass fishing. (Also known as a fishing plug) When my grandfather began bass fishing, it was his favorite plug. It was my dad’s favorite plug, and if your ancestors fished for bass, it was their favorite also.

The original was white with a red head, the famous red headed Lucky 13!

So about 2:30pm I headed for the lake and threw in my kayak about 3:30 and started chunkin’. I began conservatively. I was using a finesse worm in the newly developed springtime weed beds. I was catching a few but anticipating the last hour of daylight when I would tie on the 13 and begin reeling them in.

At about 6:30 I was ready. I was working my lure on a point where I have caught many fish in the past. I cast out over a sunken log bed and was setting on go. I chugged it a couple of times and…….my phone started ringing. You that know me understand I have crippling arthritis and my hands do not work very well. I set my pole in front of me and was being very careful to retrieve my phone from my pocket. I had it out, looked down, and wondered why JB would be calling at such a crucial moment.

Suddenly, it hit! About a two pound bass had blown up on my 13. I could only watch. I’m sitting in my kayak and they are not exactly stable to begin with. I couldn’t take a chance of losing my phone overboard so I carefully worked the phone back into my pocket. The bass was now jumping completely out of the water for the third time as I reached for my rod. I looked in the direction of the acrobatic fish and there set my Lucky 13, about twenty feet away, just floating on top. The bass had accomplished his goal of releasing itself from the well laid trap I had set for it.

Two things came to my mind:

First: Why anyone that understands anything about fishing, would call me at 6:30 to ask if I was doing any good is mind boggling.

Yes, I had spoken to JB before I launched and he knew of my plans.

Second: How could his call come exactly at the same time as the fish exploded on my plug?

I read something in the bible about the earth being cursed and all so I am just going to write this off as another attempt by the devil to keep me from having fun. Well, I got news for Satan, I had fun anyway. And I’ll deal with JB later.
